Dorkay House

Dorkay House was a non-racial training and rehearsal space for musicians and actors during apartheid. It was a site where icons such as Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim (then Dollar Brand), and Kippie Moeketsi met, practised and performed. It was the birthplace of the landmark jazz opera King Kong (1959), which propelled many South African artists to international fame. Furthermore, it hosted playwrights like Athol Fugard and Barney Simon provided a stage for influential plays such as No-Good Friday and The Blood Knot.

MBR PROJECTS is currently researching and producing a book on Dorkay House. Please contact us if you are interested in learning more about this project.
